875 in Oro Legacy on Red Wing rubber wedge sole
September 2021
It takes some break-in! The heel slips because the combination leather mid sole and thick wedge sole make the break in at the ball of the feet tough. The leather quickly becomes supple but I still feel the stitch under the arch on the right boot. On a scale of 1 to 10 comfort where 10 is a glove I'd say 8

The extra width with the EE fits much better than the single E 10. My toes have decent wiggle room, even though the ball area is still a little snug. I’m hoping these will relax a little after break-in. I’m really liking the copper rough and tough leather as well as the 360 degree storm welt in this 1907 model.

These are slightly narrower than an Iron Ranger, which I also wear in an 8.5D. I would have liked the chance to try an 8.5 wide or even an 8 wide, but these are still wearable and there's no pain.

My first pair of quality boots. The break-in wasn't too bad and the fit is pretty exact in my case. Not too narrow but not too wide either.

The heel feels a bit loose, where the forefoot is snug. Wear these with medium socks,so that’s good for me. Break-in was easy.

It's too narrow, but at the same time too voluminous. It doesn't really fit me in this size.

I tried size 8D and too tight, especially across the vamp. I bought size 9D, no half sizes available in Australia, and they were comfortable straight out of the box...... Only break in pain was around the collar on one ankle, but after 2 or 3 wears that went away.... Very comfortable, if a tad long, maybe could have gotten away with an 8.5D

The 875 is a narrow boot. The length is good, but tight. It stretches out, but would prefer a more standard sizing, like the Iron Ranger.

Took awhile to break in, but man, once you do they're amazing. I'm in serious need of a re-sole but these things feel like they'll go forever. Hiked these all the way up Ben Nevis in Scotland and they performed beautifully!

The Redwing Moctoe is a boot that's easy to fit with no real added guesswork for me. Going a half size down from Brannock is the perfect fit and I've never questioned it due to my large volume foot type.

Primarily used as work boots, difficult to break in but not overly expensive so I don't feel bad beating them up!

Fit is slightly roomie and had some heel slippage. Used a Superfeet insole and fits like a glove. Should of gone down half a size on my initial purchase. Just wasn’t sure if the width would be enough even after break in.

Hard break in period. Tried breaking in without insoles to get a quicker mold to my foot in the footbed. It hurt for a while but seems to have worked.

Boots are little snug but much better than 8.5 which was squeezing my toes and outer side of my feet a little too much. I put on the laces regularly (not too tight) and wore the boots at home for two hours, they were a little stiff but not painful. Update: Boots are breaking in nicely but I did notice the little toe nail came loose after wearing these boots for a full day. I had the boots stretched a little width wise and it fit a bit better. I like the boots and try to wear them at least once a week (have a lot of boots in rotation). Widthwise, the boots feel have some heel slip and the toe area is slightly cramped and will probably always be. From a comfort standpoint, I would give it a 6 or 7 out of 10. But I do like the way they look. Update: 10/12/23 well after one year, the leather loosen up a bit and now they are very comfortable, can easily wear all day (8 out of 10). They look great, the patina is beautiful. These boots are iconic. If I wore them every other day instead of 1 or 2 times a week, they would have broken in much faster.

Socks: Midweight merino wool Misc. Notes: Higher volume right foot Not broken in yet These boots run a little narrow. It squishes my pinky toes a little from the sides, though not as much as my Thursdays in 6.5. It's not uncomfortable but I don't think I could wear thick boot socks with these. This is certainly a surprise given how delightfully roomy I found the Iron Rangers to be. Definitely not any less sturdy-feeling than the IRs, though, and it still feels designed for a high volume foot with plenty of room in the instep and toe box. The flex point ends up in roughly the right spot, the ball of my foot is firmly in the widest part of the boot, and I have just the right amount of heel slip, so half-down from true size was a good choice for me. The leather is so dark that in direct sunlight it looks black. As soft a spot as I have for blue boots, I appreciate the chameleonic nature of these. I was a little worried that these boots would come off a little clowny on my feet, but I don't think that's the case at all. They're definitely heftier and would be difficult to pull off with skinny jeans but that suits me just fine. The comfort factor is pretty on-par for what I expect from Red Wing -- which is to say it's not particularly comfortable. There's no cushion on the insole, but the lightweight wedge outsole helps a lot with shock absorption. I'm looking forward to when the insole starts to mold to my feet. Really minor complaint: once again (as with the IRs), I found the laces to be too short, though I suspect they'll be sufficient for someone with lower-volume feet.

Too narrow for my wide feet (Brannock 10E) in this size. A little stretching on the R boot has helped a lot. The 10’s are a little too long and can start to have that dreaded clown toe look with the flex point too far back. You could probably correctly say that this #23 last is not a good match for my feet. But I love this make up with the charcoal leather, tan welt, and white sole. So they’ve been worth the struggle.

I have three pairs of Red Wings all in size 10.5 D. I have found that as they break in the fit is on the loose side. I chose this size based on being fitted at a Red Wing store. It made sense since I wear a size 11 in most sneakers. However, I recently checked my size on a brannock device and found that I measure closer to a size 10C. I always suspected that I have a narrow foot, but thought I was closer to a 10.5 or 11. So, that explains the fit issues I have been having with Red Wings.

Fit was good but overtime the boot had a lot of volume. The biggest issue was not enough length. The flex area was painful and the boot just fits a half size short. As much as it pains me to admit a 12C would likely be the best fit for me.

For me, insoles are necessary in this boot. When I remove them, the boot is too big. I tried a half size down, and then the boot is too small (regardless of insoles). The boots are nice, and don't have a long break in period, at least in my experience.
