Who ever had such a shoe, especially from the Heritage line in the hand, knows exactly what I mean. The Iron Ranger is just a real shoe: leather, hooks, eyelets, sole... and everything somehow permanently connected. And it smells the same. I believe that boys have a similar relationship to jeans, leather jackets, pocket knives and good shoes as they do to cars or motorcycles. However, with inspection of the leather and the processing it also becomes clear that the gentlemen in Minnesota, blood, sweat and tears packed between the purchase of a new Red Wings and the "friend for life". I will say, it is often said when entering, " Band-aids paved his way". But that's the way it has to be, it's a good thing, and it's fitting for a shoe that looks like it was worn by Tom Joad himself. For all its work authenticity, however, the shoe is quite suitable for city streets. The Iron Ranger go with everything that also has "heritage". Whether it is jeans, T-shirt, Troyer and wax jacket, or a wool or tweed suit. Ok, 350,- € are actually already an investment, but if you consider that the Iron Ranger, like almost all models of the Heritage and the Classic Work series are produced with just this large share of handwork, actually not so bad. And if you take care of the shoes to some extent, you have a friend for life, as already mentioned. And they are timeless anyway.

I loved these boots but I have to admit that the 8 last is just not for me. With long walks these just rub the side of my toes and instep in bad ways. I’ve always liked the style of these and really recommend people getting their feet properly measured with a Brannock device and not listen to the suggestion the Redwing store gives as I have found they often size too small.

I have a normal foot I believe (not wide) and there was basically no break in period for me. They fit good the moment I put them on. I only feel slight discomfort on the sides of the feet when I lace the boots tightly. They are comfortable, sturdy, and look amazing. One thing I also noticed is they are almost slip resistant. It is very icy in the winters where I live so this is important to me. They can be worn both casually and in more formal occasions.

I bought this from a RW store, based on the staff's recommendation. I did not get a good look at the Brannock device, but the staff said I needed a 8.5 due to my width. Fit wise, it is good, but I do have a lot of extra space in the toe box. Which was good during a period of me buying boots that were 1/2 size too small and getting callouses. This pair allowed me to wear boots comfortably while my callouses heal. I have almost 2" in space at the back when my toe is all the way forward, but they don't feel loose at all during regular wear.

8086, Charcoal Rough and Tough Leather, Vibram 430 mini lug.
7/22
The fit on it seems a bit volumous for me. But that is expected out of a C width. Charcoal Rough and Tough does not have the give that Copper Rough and Tough does. It also seems less elastic and a firmer temper than Amber or Black Harness. Not quite as firm as Featherstone though. The leather patina's well and with buffing gets a nice burnishing. Mine are worn at my work place and probably I average 7 miles a day. They don't really lock at the heel. The fit isn't perfect unfortunately due to me having a small ball width it often feels like I slip forward. I can wear them without any heavy discomfort. But I do feel pressure in the ball at the end of the day. Length is fine, flex point is ideal on the left foot, right is just a tad forward. On this last I have to go TTS on heel to toe which isn't ideal for a lot of people but my feet are odd. Overall they patina amazingly. But compared to Copper Rough and Tough the upper can lend itself to a much longer break in. I'm well north of 600+ hours in these boots and the leather upper still feels like with time it will comform to the foot better. Care to this Oiled Nubuck has been a water wipe down. Saphir Medaille D'or 1925 Oiled Leather Cream in Neutral suitable for pull-up leathers. I did over the winter months spray Saphir's Super Invulner which is good for imparting Nubuck's with water resistance. I wear them best with lightweight Darn Tough Spur Socks and Red Wings boot trees. They have been conditioned once since ownership but need a second coating. Overall I have found it to be an extremely low maintenance leather. It is scuff resistant and most things buff out. When the leather is dry it will start to scuff heavy, gouge, and the flex point will start feeling dry to the touch. Copious buffing helps but up here in the North, winter, heavy use lend me conditioning about every 4-6 months when worn two days a week. The Vibram 430 mini lug is extremely stiff. I can't help wondering if this boot would perform at a higher level in terms of comfort with a leather insole and a Vibram 700. Once I wear through the sole I plan to try that and see if the fit becomes better.

I initially bought the wrong size at the suggestion of redwing, but thanks to a manufacturer defect they replaced my boots with the proper size and can give an accurate review. With the proper sizing the boots only required a few hours to break in. I now wear them 4 days a week and use cedar shoe trees inbetween wears. They’re developing a nice patina and the QC seems fairly good. The leather is creasing significantly where the foot breaks, most likely due to my particular cut of leather. As it’s only been a month I’ll be back to update the review at 6 months of solid wear.

These fit very well from Grayle’s recommended 1/2 size down from my brannock size 11.5. I tried on a new pair of 10.5D in a Red Wing store (I highly recommend their free Ultimate Fit Experience if possible for digital scans of your foot size and step dynamics btw), and they would technically fit but not as comfortably as the 11. I’d like to try a 10.5 EE and 11 EE when they have more stock available to find the perfect fit for me. These are a bit snug for D-E feet at the ball of my feet and seem to be fine for length. They fit snugly on my high instep and top of my foot just as expected from other IR reviews, so hopefully they’ll fit perfectly like custom fit slippers in time. I got mine 2nd hand through eBay lightly worn. The uppers were partially broken in, and the footbed had started breaking into the first owners’s feet. It’ll be a bit uncomfortable for me breaking them in for my foot, but I’m getting half the break in for $150 less than list price while new supplies are limited everywhere. That’s worth it to me to test out the Iron Rangers. Many reviews say that people tend to love them or hate them with nothing in between. The unlined leather is noticeably thicker than other $150-300 heritage style or just Goodyear welted leather footwear that I’ve tried. The old style nitrile cork outsoles grip better than I expected, but I’ll likely get the new style Vibram mini lugs whenever these need a resole. I did upgrade the laces from the standard length (43 inch I believe) to the 63 inch. I could barely get a single knot tied with them laced up snuggly at first. The longer laces are just right for me to get a double knot in. I reconditioned them lightly with obenauf’s wax cream, and they kept their Amber harness color very well after a day. See photos with blue background for after shots. I tried the red wing suggested mink oil on some other brown boots, and those darkened substantially. Both were beading water off once dry tho and had the leather feeling much more supple. Hope this helps.

I currently am wearing a 8.5E as it was a used purchase from a friend who didn't fit into them. They definitely are a touch long and a little bit narrow as my foot spills over the welt just passed the waist of the boot. I use them as a daily, casual shoe, mostly walking on concrete or paved paths around town or at the office. I've applied Smith's leather balm every 3-4 months. I wear them more than most of my shoes as they are more rugged and I don't worry about damaging them.

Excellent fit. I did not need breaking in these boots, they were supple out of the bat. These boots have molded to my feet in an exceptional way. Very comfortable, robust, and well constructed. Just one small stitching mistake in the triple stitch row, but nothing to worry about. In the end, this is a handmade product, so I think it adds character to the boots. I had the opportunity to try the rough and tough IR, and let me tell you, the Amber Harness 8111 was a very different experience for me. My first GYW boot. Break in was reasonable -- maybe 10 wears. These are probably the boot I go back to most often. They're ultra versatile. These have the least forgiving sole in my collection, which includes Thursday, Allen Edmonds, Grant Stone, and RW Blacksmith. These have gotten hundreds of wears in a few years and they're holding up great. I maintain them carefully and insert shoe trees, so these suckers should still be kicking for another 10 years.

I need to size down by half size (usual size is 11). The last No. 8 has a roomy toe box. Shock absorption was pretty bad on this one. The no. 8 last seems to fit really well for my wide foot. I usually buy a size 12 (euro 45-46) in sneakers so I was dubious as to whether a size 11 would fit. There was virtually no break-in because the size was so well calibrated. FYI, they measured me on their "Volumental" machine which was very comprehensive.

These were tricky to fit. I tried an 11.5 and my foot was swimming in them so exchanged them for an 11. Even after breaking it, I have rubbing on my right pinky due to a bunion on that foot. Redwing Iron Rangers are kinda weird in their sizing. I wear a size 12 sneaker but I went with a 11ee. My first pair I bought from REI and they were an 11D but they ended up being too tight around my foot. Luckily I was able to return them to REI and then I went to Red Wing to buy them in EE size. After a couple of frustrating misses on getting the right size for a good daily wear casual boot, I decided to go into a local Red Wings store. My intent was to see if they could tell me precisely what size my feet were. Not only did they do that but they fit me into the Iron Ranger in a 10D. Initially, they wanted to go a full size down from my Brannock with a 9.5D but my right foot is really a narrow E and the 9.5 was painful in the instep. The 10.5D is fantastic though and so far the break-in hasn't been near as bad as I've heard. Overall the Red Wing retail experience was phenomenal! They have some crazy tech to give you a ton of detail on your feet. These boots will serve as a great daily driver as I build out my boot collection.

Socks: Midweight merino wool; heavyweight boot socks Misc. Notes: High volume right foot Bought secondhand, pre-broken in --- Update 11/4/22: After buying boots that accommodate my width better, I couldn't help but notice how narrow these boots were every time I wore them. So I've passed them along to someone who will hopefully be much more comfortable in them. --- Update 8/4/22: I took the heel liners out to double-check my alignment. It's fine, and quite comfortable. Still love the space in the toes and on my instep. I think the IRs have converted me to bigger, more rugged-looking boots. --- Update 7/3/22: The review below is from before I learned my Brannock (or "true") size is actually 7.5D due to my arch length. Previously I was referencing Red Wing's Volumental measurements, which put me at a 6.1EE (which is based on my heel-to-toe length). I've kept the review largely as is because my experiences with this boot's fit and comfort are still relevant (even if the interpretations may be off), and I think it's a good illustration of how complicated, varied, and subjective fit can be. I will contradict myself from the past, however: do not get sized by Red Wing's Volumental. Know your heel-to-ball Brannock size before you go to try stuff on at Red Wing. --- This is going to be a story so I'll just put my size review up here: they fit decently with a heel liner and with either midweight or thick boot socks, and there's loads of room in the instep and toe box. They definitely had high volume feet in mind when designing the last. There's some discomfort with the way the right tongue wrinkles over my foot which may have something to do with my right foot's higher volume, but that isn't an issue with thick socks. Something worth noting is that, at time of writing, the contact form is broken on Red Wing's U.S. site and they don't respond to fit requests through Grayle. If you want to figure out your sizing you're going to have to either give them a call or go into a brick and mortar Red Wing. ... Which segues nicely to the next portion of my review. Read on if you're interested in my experience with a Red Wing sales associate's in-person fit advice. But be warned: it's a long one. --- Before I had a chance to walk into a Red Wing, I'd been measured on a Brannock device (after some poor fit experiences with Thursday Boot Co., check out my other reviews if you're curious) by two separate people who said I was a 7.5D-E and 8D. I didn't take their word for it -- I'd tried on a whole bunch of sneakers and work boots in 7D, 7.5D, and 8D to test that out. That was before I knew anything about how shoes ought to fit, and the 7.5D work boots and the 8D sneakers were by far comfier and more secure than the shoes I'd been wearing my entire adult life up to that point (in fact I hadn't realized that shoes could get so comfortable) so I assumed they were correct. When I walked in and asked to try on some Iron Rangers, the guy looked me over and said, "Well, I'll check and see if we have any women's sizes in the back." I told him, "I was just measured at a men's size 7.5-8D, I don't think the women's sizes will work for me." I also told him which boots from other retailers I owned in which sizes and how they fit. Heedless, he insisted on bringing the women's sizes out, one in a women's size 8B, another in 8.5B. I played along because I figured it would be obvious that they didn't fit... and if somehow they did then great. Sure enough, they were way too tight -- I would've been standing on the welt if they'd been broken in -- and I said so. Then I asked, "Can you bring out some men's sizes, just to see?" He conceded. I tried on a men's 7D and 7.5D. The whole time the guy chatted with me, perfectly friendly, but emphasized their return policy, told me that Red Wing's leathers are such that they stretch out twice as much as any other leather, and told me horror stories of people (specifically women) who came in and bought a size they thought was comfortable out of the box only to come back three weeks later with their feet swimming in their boots even with three pairs of socks. None of that seemed right to me -- particularly the leather stretching so much... wouldn't that indicate really poor quality leather, and if not wouldn't that make for a boot that nobody would want? -- but I still listened because even if he was straight-up lying to me he still had more experience with boot fit and probably didn't want me to return my boots so I figured that there would be value in going along with what he was saying. Both the 7D and 7.5D fit well enough, snug but not uncomfortable. But I decided that the 7D would be the best option for me just in case he was being genuine about how much I can expect the leather to stretch. What did he have to say about it? "Well, right off the bat I think it looks too long on you." (As I think about it now, is merely looking long a reliable indication of shoe fit? What if I just happened to have long feet? Surely not everyone's feet look proportionate with the rest of their body.) At the time I thought, "Fair enough, I'm pretty short, he's probably right." But I proceeded to focus on how they felt on my feet, comparing them to my other experiences with boots. After a bit I spotted their fancy 3D imaging foot measuring device and thought to myself, "Hey, why not? More data points can't hurt, right? And I am curious about my arches and volume..." Also I hoped that, faced with the bare facts, the guy could offer me better suggestions rather than just try to scare me off. He agreed, but before we got started he made sure to let me know that the device was not the end-all be-all of fit, that I shouldn't get attached to the idea of the numbers. Good advice broadly speaking, but given everything else he'd said I still couldn't help but feel like he was trying to prime me for further persuasion away from the men's boots. He did change his tune after seeing my measurements: 6.1EE, wide through the whole foot, with high arches and a high right instep. "That explains why the larger sizes fit you better, is because of the width," he admitted. "Men's sizes will probably be your best bet." (Nevermind that I had already said so at the beginning and had proven in front of him that the women's boots did not fit.) He mostly stopped talking to me about the horror stories with boots ending up being too big, though he did give me vague reminders that they will fit differently after break-in and continued to remind me of the return policy. He also brought out a couple pairs of custom insoles and had me try them on in the 7D. They made the boots way too tight and I told him so, but he continued to try to sell them to me, saying that it might improve the fit after the boots fully break in. After a little while he offered to leave me alone to consider and I accepted. I must've paced around in that tiny store a hundred times. In the end, I had enough doubts that I decided that I would buy used Iron Rangers (after trying on a whole bunch of cheaper boots in a bunch of different sizes) and see how they fit then. Poor guy wouldn't be getting his commission. Feeling a little bad for wasting his time and thinking that they could come in handy if the IRs were in fact too loose after break-in, I bought the insoles I felt were most comfortable, thanked him, and left, rather disheartened by my experience. Now, I would like to say that I took a good hour and a half of this fellow's time. Other customers came in and he took care of them but he still was still attentive to and focused on me. He was very patient and never unfriendly or unprofessional. And if indeed he thought I didn't know what I was doing or talking about, he wouldn't have been entirely wrong. I'm sure I revealed my ignorance at multiple points throughout the fitting. Given how I'd had to interface with customers at one of my previous jobs myself, I can totally understand if he'd decided to try to manipulate me because he assumed that I would dig my heels in and demand to get my way otherwise. All the same, I'm quite frustrated that he didn't back off from persuading me away from the men's sizes until after he saw that I had EE feet. He may have been right about the 7Ds being too long, but I got the sense he'd dismissed my word outright. If he had been the one to suggest that we measure my feet I would've felt a lot more like he was actually trying to get my fit down rather than convince me to buy the boot that he thought I ought to buy based on one look at me -- and it would've saved us both a lot of time. I'm not sure if anyone else will have the same problem as this was just one guy, but I would recommend to anyone new to buying Red Wing boots to ask the sales associate to measure you first even if you know your Brannock so you both can start out on the same page. Anyway, cut to more than a month later, after learning a lot more about sizing and fit and testing the fit of a lot more boots, I have my used Iron Rangers in 7D. They did not stretch out twice as much. They are still too tight with insoles (so that was $70 down the drain, but I saved ~$180 buying secondhand so I can't complain too much), but I am so happy with the room in the instep and the toe box. Compared to my Helm Zinds and Thursday Vanguards in 7D these boots are much better suited for my feet. Though my tastes are generally geared towards sleeker boots the IRs are an exception because they really nailed the look. Something I found a little odd was that the flex point ended up precisely where it ought to -- roughly over where my toes meet my foot -- without heel liners. However the balls of my feet didn't really end up where they ought to have in the shoe. I put in the liners anyway and I'd say I'm aligned better now. One very minor complaint, though: the laces that come with the IRs aren't very long (about 48"). I had to use a different pair of laces in order to have enough to work with for my high volume foot. They were sufficient on my left foot, though.

I have three pair of Iron Rangers. My 8111’s are the ones I’m mentioning here. I bought them as factory seconds and was able to try on multiple pairs to find these. The fit is great and as I continue to break them in they only get more comfortable. I could probably wear an 11.5 if I were to try on enough pairs or just get the 2E off the bat.

So I made the mistake of buying my black harness iron rangers in a 9.5D hoping they would fit my 10.5D feet and man they're just a tad bit too small in the ball and heel. Overall though, they're Iron Rangers and they live up to the hype.

Had to get rid of these. I tried a few sizes up and down, the 13 d was the right width but too long, 12 EE was right length but too wide.

Good fit, no real break-in problems as it was second hand. Very comfortable once the leather is fully worn in. The neo cork sole is grippy in most circumstances.

Easy break-in, perfect in lenght but a little tight in width. I can only wear lightweight socks. Got some heel slip, hope it'll go better with use. I'm a little bit more than 8D with lightweight socks, which becomes 8.5 E with heavyweight socks and i can only wear lightweight with this pair of i.r. I'd like to try 8E but seems pretty hard to find here on italy

This size boot fits my foot amazingly well. It was like an epiphany when I first put these on my feet. No other boot has "fit" my foot so well.

RW did the Volumental sizing and gave me the 7.5D which is a fine fit. The soles are hard but they walk fine. I'm very satisfied with them and use them for work in rotation with other boots. No break-in and they feel fine on lunch walks. The leather seems to darken where my jeans rub on them. The leather looked dry as they were made in February and I didn't purchase them until Sept. I used a little Bicks 4 on them as I didn't want to darken the leather.

Break in was only about two weeks and was surprisingly easy. Having watched online reviews I thought it would be harder. My Brannock size is 13 EE but these 13 D iron rangers fit perfectly. This came as a surprise as I have really quite wide feet and struggle to find shoes and Running shoe to fit my width normally
